Apple iPad price plans will be available from O2, Orange and Vodafone, with none of the operators demanding users sign a long-term contract. All three mobile phone networks that will be offering mobile broadband access for iPad users have now announced their pricing and buyers of the latest Apple gadget are likely to find themselves choosing between O2 and Orange when they want to access the web on the move.

Vodafone, meanwhile, are offering their deals for 30-day periods, meaning there’s no lengthy contracts to sign up to. Three are also boasting of their flexibility – their deals are contract-free, meaning you can activate or cancel them at any time.

Orange, meanwhile, does not allow users of its pay as you go, daily or weekly offers to access Wi-Fi hotspots. The two monthly packages that it offers – at £15 and £25 a month – do come with Wi-Fi access but that access is capped at a rather paltry 750MB. The reason, it would seem, is that Orange customers can not only access BT’s 3,800 Openzone hotspots, but also a further 150,000 BT Business Hubs, giving users a total of 153,800 places in which they can browse the web over Wi-Fi.

If you want to bypass the Three option, the choice between O2, Voda and Orange is likely to come down to the extras they offer – O2 offers unlimited WiFi access through The Cloud and BT Openzone hotspots, while Orange’s WiFi access is limited to a 750MB ‘fair usage’ policy through BT Openzone. But Orange wins in terms of flexibility if you do go over your data allocation. O2 let you ‘top up’ with either 500MB, 1GB or 3GB extra, while Orange charge a ‘pay what you use’ flat rate of 5p per MB over your limit, capped at £40 per month.

For those who expect to use less data there’s a choice between O2′s daily rate of 500MB for £2 (good for short unexpected periods of WiFilessness), Orange’s weekly plan of 1GB for £7.50 (good for times when you know you’ll be without reliable WiFi for a few days), and Three’s 1GB a month for £7.50 (good people who only take their iPad on the road occasionally). O2 and Vodafone also offer 1GB per month deals.

Of course, there’s another option, which has been suggested by several commentators – including Shane Richmond and Don McAllister – which is to abandon the 3G version of the iPad entirely, and instead buy the WiFi-only version plus a MiFi modem.
